Amy Winehouse: Before and After Drug Abuse Photos.

The changes drugs have made to Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse Before Drugs and after drugs.

Then and Now: Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse is only 5'2", but with her swoosh of black eyeliner and towering beehive – which she calls her "secret weapon"– she's larger than life. But it'll take more than a killer 'do to defeat this talented songbird's demons.

Back to Black – a brutally honest retelling of her breakup with Blake Fielder-Civil – has sold more than 3.3 million copies. But in 2007, the brilliant Brit was hospitalized for a drug overdose, checked into – and out of – rehab, and got busted for drug possession. She reunited with and married Fielder-Civil, only to have him hauled off to jail (they have since divorced and once again reunited).

In January 2008, Winehouse entered rehab weeks before winning five Grammys, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist.

The funeral for British singer, Amy Winehouse, was held in London, England today, as the singer was found dead on Saturday, July 23, 2011, of a suspected drug overdose. Dozens of Winehouse's family and friends, came out to pay their respects and bid her farewell.

Crowds gather outside the funeral

Winehouse's ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, who publicly admitted he introduced the once healthy singer to heroin and crack-cocaine, marking a massive downward spiral in her life and career, was barred from the funeral by her family and denied permission to leave prison to attend the funeral.

No official cause of death has been determined at this time, due to the autopsy being branded "inconclusive." Standard toxicology tests are underway, with the results expected in several weeks. Winehouse leaves behind an estate worth millions and numerous unreleased songs.

Her story should serve as a sobering reminder to many of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, as Winehouse had so much to live for, but due to not embracing the importance of remaining sober, lost her life. This really is a tragic waste of life, because as accomplished as she was in her chosen profession, there was still so much more she could have done over time, with the talents God gave her. Drug and alcohol abuse brought it to a halt.

It is full time the entertainment industry started doing more to keep artists drug free. It is ridiculous the number of entertainers that have overdosed. The National Basketball Association in America has taken a proactive role in educating athletes on the dangers of fame and wealth. It's time the music, film and television industries in Britain and America do the same.

Amy Jade Winehouse (14 September 1983 – 23 July 2011) was an English singer-songwriter known for her powerful contralto vocalsand her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul and jazz.

Winehouse's 2003 debut album, Frank, was critically successful in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her 2006 follow-up album, Back to Black, led to six Grammy Award nominations and five wins, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night, and made Winehouse the first British female to win five Grammys including three of the "Big Four": Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. On 14 February 2007, she won a BRIT Award for Best British Female Artist; she had also been nominated for Best British Album. She won the Ivor Novello Award three times, one in 2004 for Best Contemporary Song (musically and lyrically) for "Stronger Than Me", one in 2007 for Best Contemporary Song for "Rehab", and one in 2008 for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for "Love Is a Losing Game", among other distinctions. The album was the third seller of the 2000s in the United Kingdom

Winehouse was credited as an influence in the rise in popularity of female musicians and soul music, and also for revitalising British music. Winehouse's distinctive style made her a muse for fashion designers such as Karl Lagerfeld. Winehouse's problems with drug and alcohol abuse, and her self-destructive behaviours were regular tabloid news from 2007 until her death. She and her former husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, were plagued by legal troubles that left him serving prison time. In 2008, Winehouse faced a series of health complications that threatened both her career and her life

Winehouse was born in the Southgate area of north London to a Jewish family who were influential toward her interest in jazz. Winehouse was the younger of two children (older brother Alex) of Mitchell Winehouse, a taxi driver, and Janis Winehouse (née Seaton), a pharmacist Mitchell often sang Frank Sinatra songs to young Amy, who also took to a constant habit of singing to the point that teachers found it difficult keeping her quiet in class

When Winehouse was nine years old, her grandmother, Cynthia, suggested she attend the Susi Earnshaw Theatre School for further training. At age ten, Winehouse founded a short-lived rap group called Sweet 'n' Sour with childhood friend Juliette Ashby. She stayed at the Earnshaw school for four years before seeking full time training at Sylvia Young Theatre School, but was allegedly expelled at 14 for "not applying herself" and for piercing her nose With other children from the Sylvia Young School, she appeared in an episode of The Fast Show in 1997 She later attended the BRIT School in Selhurst, Croydonand attended Southgate School and Ashmole School

I don't usually (ever) take to my blog to write about things to do with celebrities (the Royal Wedding aside) because a lot of the time they're getting enough exposure and this blog isn't really about celebs now, is it?

However I make an exception when someone like Amy Winehouse dies so suddenly. No official statement has been released around why she died so let's not speculate or assume right now. All I know is that around 3.54pm today Emergency Services arrived at her home in Camden where Amy Winehouse was pronounced dead at the scene.

She was clearly troubled and addiction in all it's forms is a horrible life for anyone, but especially a young, talented and creative woman. I didn't like her music at first, but then I heard "Back to Black" and those lyrics really rang true for me at a point in my life in 2007.

So let's remember something in all this hot mess: a young woman, 2 years older than myself, has died today and that's a real loss to the World in my opinion. So sad for her family.
